The Transport Transition as a Socio-ecological Real-World Experiment

The mobility transition unfolding in the city of Berlin is a unique learning opportunity for sustainability research. The EXPERI project is a collaboration between the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies Potsdam (IASS), Technische Universität Berlin and the DLR Institute of Transport Research. It is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The EXPERI project is investigating how current transport systems can be transitioned to deliver improved social and environmental outcomes for the city and its citizens. EXPERI is developing, implementing, and systematically monitoring several real-world experiments on active mobility in Berlin together with its practice partners, among them larger and smaller interest groups for cyclists, pedestrians and cargo bikes. The research undertaken also explores issues of acceptance, social justice, and participation in relation to the transformation of transport infrastructure and the public space.

The Berlin Mobility Act (2018) serves as an inter- and transdisciplinary case study for this project. Historically, pedestrians, cyclists and persons using public transport have been at a disadvantage to motorists in terms of the space afforded to them in urban areas. In response, the Mobility Act seeks to significantly extend the city's active transport infrastructure by encouraging active mobility with the overall aim of achieving both safe and barrier-free mobility in Berlin.
