Antarctic Futures is a dynamic online game to engage young people in discussion around climate change and the future of Antarctica.

The game’s goal is to translate complex scientific scenarios about Antarctica into accessible and playable experiences. Participants can experiment with various global policies in response to climate change to see how they can avoid — or not! — a global environmental catastrophe.

Antartic Futures is part of the Antarctic Cities project, led by researchers at Western Sydney University and University of Tasmania. The project examines how Southern Rim cities close to the Antarctic - Hobart, Punta Arenas, Christchurch, Ushaia and Cape Town - can work to protect this icy continent that in turn sustains global ecological systems.

The game was developed through a collaborative design process with young people. Between 2017 and 2019, workshops were held in each of the gateway cities and the result of this process is a free strategy game (English and Spanish versions) which is open source and made available on Github.
