World Human Rights Day is observed annually on 10 December to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The 2025 theme focuses on Holocaust remembrance, marking 80 years since the atrocities of the Second World War and honouring the respect for dignity and human rights, and the international laws that protect us all.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of this milestone declaration, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. The day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights worldwide and the collective responsibility to address issues such as poverty, discrimination, and inequality.
The day is marked by political conferences, cultural events, photo exhibitions, and educational programs designed to inform people about their rights and the importance of protecting them globally. Organisations and individuals are encouraged to participate in awareness campaigns and advocacy efforts to promote human rights for all.
