World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on 2 February to raise awareness about wetlands. This day also marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted as an international treaty in 1971.
The theme for 2025 is "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future". The observance coincides with the upcoming 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands (COP15) in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
The urgency of wetland conservation is highlighted by alarming statistics: nearly 90% of the world's wetlands have vanished since the 1700s, disappearing three times faster than forests. These ecosystems are crucial for biodiversity, climate mitigation, and freshwater availability.
Established as a UN International Day in 2021, the celebration is organised by the Convention on Wetlands Secretariat and welcomes participation from organisations, governments, and individuals worldwide. World Wetlands Day serves as a reminder of the critical need to protect and restore these vital ecosystems for future generations.
