World Metropolitan Day 2024

© Metropolis

World Metropolitan Day is held on 14 October, commemorating the adoption of the Montréal Declaration on Metropolitan Areas. Metropolises are key stakeholders in global affairs because of their scope, size, economic and cultural significance.

The theme for World Metropolitan Day 2024, organised by Metropolis and UN-Habitat, is Leading the Just Transition, highlighting the crucial role metropolises play in addressing the climate crisis and advocating for transformative action. Dakar will be the host city of World Metropolitan Day 2024.

Get involved!

Join the conversation wherever you are in the world, by hosting an event in your metropolis. This could be a discussion, online panel, masterclass, or learning activity to spread awareness and share knowledge.

Why host an event?

  • Be part of a campaign demanding global recognition for the unique challenges facing metropolitan areas
  • Increase the visibility of your City’s initiatives, which will be promoted through your event, The WMD website and Metropolis social media channels
  • Spread awareness and share knowledge. Demonstrate how your city is addressing the climate crisis and learn from the experience of other cities.
