World Metropolitan Day 2024

World Metropolitan Day, celebrated on October 14 is a global day of celebration led by Metropolis and UN-Habitat in the framework of Urban October. This day serves as a commemoration of the adoption of the Montréal Declaration of Metropolitan Areas (2015) and provides a global platform that unites metropolises from around the world.

World Metropolitan Day highlights the vital role of metropolitan areas in our urbanising world. It raises awareness about the challenges and opportunities faced by these dynamic regions, which drive economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability.

The theme for World Metropolitan Day 2024, "Leading the Just Transition," will be explored in the host city of Dakar, emphasising the critical role that cities and young people play in driving a fair and equitable transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future while addressing social and economic inequalities, ensuring that no one is left behind.
