UNDRR Disaster Risk Encyclopedia

© UCLG Learning

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has launched a comprehensive encyclopedia of disaster risk reduction through its PreventionWeb platform, providing crucial educational resources for professionals working to understand and mitigate global catastrophes. The materials help users learn to understand the concept of disaster risk, risk assessment, management strategies, and the importance of collaboration among stakeholders for effective disaster risk reduction, according to the platform.

The encyclopedia addresses fundamental concepts that define modern disaster risk reduction work. Disaster risk is defined as the consequence of the interaction between a hazard and the characteristics that make people and places vulnerable and exposed, while the policy objective of anticipating and reducing risk is called disaster risk reduction (DRR), with disaster risk management (DRM) describing the actions that aim to achieve the objective of reducing risk. The resource explores everything from deterministic and probabilistic risk to intensive and extensive risk.

The platform offers a range of knowledge products and services to facilitate the work of disaster risk reduction professionals and is managed by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. With evidence showing that by understanding and managing risk, major reductions in disaster losses can be achieved, the encyclopedia serves as a critical tool for building global capacity to address increasing climate-related risks and natural disasters.
