The Gender Snapshot 2024

This publication, a collaborative effort by UN Women and UN DESA, marks another annual update on the strides made towards gender equality within the framework of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It offers an in-depth examination of the progress—or lack thereof—in each goal as it pertains to gender parity.

Despite some positive developments like reduced poverty, narrowing educational gender gaps, and legal reform efforts, the outlook is concerning. With only six years until the 2030 SDG deadline, no indicator under Goal 5 (gender equality) has been fully achieved. At current rates, eradicating extreme poverty for women could take an additional 137 years. No nation has implemented a comprehensive set of laws addressing discrimination, gender-based violence, marital equality, pay equity, and sexual and reproductive health access.

Gender balance in parliaments may not be attained until 2063. The report emphasises the significant costs of neglecting women's rights and highlights proven solutions benefiting women, girls, and society at large. It advocates for transformative action to alter the current trajectory and significantly accelerate progress on gender equality and women's rights.
