The Guangzhou International Award was established in 2012 to advocate urban innovation, accelerate the attainment of the SDGs and encourage international exchange and city-to-city cooperation in doing so. The award was co-founded by the City of Guangzhou along with UCLG (United Cities and Local Government)) and Metropolis (the World Association of Major Metropolises).
The Guangzhou Institute for Urban Innovation together with Penn Institute for Urban Research and co-authors the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and Wellcome Trust have produced a report based on the 2020 Guangzhou Award. The report analyses 45 case studies (all semi-finalists) of innovative urban initiatives from around the world, providing evidence that city-level innovation is essential to achieving the SDGs and suggesting ways nations can partner with and support cities in pursuit of this common goal. The report also address lessons drawn from the Award as they related to the Covid-19 response and the SDGs under review at the High-Level Political Forum held in July 2021
