Montevideo

Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay and the southernmost capital city in the Americas. According to national statistics, the city of Montevideo has a population of 1,774,000 (approximately one third of Uruguay’s population) as of January 2023.

As the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo is the economic, political and cultural centre of the country. The Port of Montevideo is one of the major ports of South America and plays a significant role in the local economy. Apart from trade, finance, tourism, media and education are large industry sectors. Montevideo has a very rich architectural heritage and an impressive number of writers, artists, and musicians. The city has one of the highest quality of life standards in South America.

The Mayor

Carolina Cosse Garrido was born in Montevideo in 1962

In 1991, Cosse graduated from the University of the Republic with a degree in electrical engineering. In 2009, at the same study centre, she obtained a master's degree in mathematical engineering.

A member of the Broad Front coalition, her career in politics commenced in 2008, when she assumed the position of director of the Information Technology Division of the Departmental Government of Montevideo. In May 2010, President José Mujica appointed her as president of ANTEL (National Administration of Telecommunications), a position she held until 2015.

Cosse served as Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining from 2015 to 2019, during the second administration of Tabaré Vázquez. At the 2019 Uruguayan general election, she was elected as a Senator of Uruguay.

On 27 September 2020, Carolina Cosse was elected as Intendant of Montevideo.
