Revitalizing communities through art: The Legacy Mural Initiative

Tafelsig, a township located in Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town, has long been plagued by gang violence and other violent crimes. With at least one murder taking place each day, the community faces various social ills such as high levels of unemployment, substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, and single-parent households. In an effort to address these issues and create safe, dignified, and colorful spaces, community activists Michael and Natasha Bell launched the Legacy Mural Initiative.

 

The Healing Power of Art
The initiative includes various elements such as painting, mural arts, landscaping, urban design, architecture, and lighting. As a victim of a violent crime in 2008, Michael Bell understands the importance of creating safe and uplifting spaces and his aim is to use the healing power of art to inspire and motivate young people.



 

Painting for a Cause
In 2019, Michael & Natasha Bell started PAINT with the aim of painting all the walls in the parks and public spaces. The project includes mural arts and painting, providing a platform for young upcoming artists to showcase their talent. A team of six community members volunteers their time to do the painting and also maintain the space by cleaning it regularly.

Phase One: Making a Difference
Thanks to the support of Artbridge, Hamilton’s Brushware , and AkzoNobel, the Legacy Mural Initiative has completed six murals and a surface art installation as part of phase one of the project. The murals serve as outdoor classrooms and showcase the community’s culture and identity. Without the support of these sponsors, the initiative would not have been able to make such a significant impact in the community.

Phase Two: Building a Street Art Gallery
The Legacy Mural Initiative aims to create a Street Art Gallery along AZ Berman drive in Tafeslig spanning 10 kilometers. With the completion of phase one, the initiative hopes to commence with phase two in the next few weeks. Artbridge Projects, based in New York, co-funds the artists' fee, while Hamilton’s Brushware supplies all the necessary tools, and AkzoNobel, through its local subsidiary Dulux SA, supplies the paint.
 

Changing Perceptions
Since the unveiling of the artwork, the spaces have attracted a lot of media attention and have even been used as backdrops for photoshoots and music videos. The murals have made a significant difference in the community, and people now see these spaces differently.
