The Gender Snapshot 2023

This latest publication, a collaborative effort by UN Women and UN DESA, marks another annual update on the strides made towards gender equality within the framework of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It offers an in-depth examination of the progress—or lack thereof—in each goal as it pertains to gender parity.

As we approach the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the goal of gender equality remains elusive, with current trajectories suggesting it may remain out of reach. Should present patterns persist, projections indicate that over 340 million women and girls will endure extreme poverty by the decade's end, with nearly a quarter facing moderate to severe food scarcity. The exacerbating effects of anthropogenic climate change threaten to deepen these vulnerabilities, potentially leaving an additional 236 million women and girls in a state of food insecurity under dire climate conditions.

You can search the use platform for case studies on gender equality by choosing SDG 5 or topic: gender equality.

The chasm in gender-based power dynamics and leadership roles are deeply ingrained, and at the pace we're moving, women of the coming generation will continue to bear a heavier burden of unpaid care and domestic labour, averaging 2.3 more hours daily than their male counterparts. The eradication of intimate partner violence remains an unachieved milestone, and women are not expected to reach an equal share of managerial roles in the workplace even by the year 2050. While educational access for girls has seen some improvement, completion rates have yet to hit the universal target.

The report calls for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to gender equality, one that encompasses involvement from various stakeholders and is underpinned by consistent financial support. Failing to escalate efforts and invest in gender equality not only stalls progress but also risks compromising the success of the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
