Recognising Cities and Individuals Advancing Cultural Rights
The 7th edition of the International Award UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21 has been launched for 2025-2026. This prestigious award recognises cities and individuals who have distinguished themselves in promoting cultural rights for local sustainable development, highlighting the vital role culture plays in creating inclusive, resilient, and vibrant communities.

Two Award Categories
The Award features two distinct categories designed to celebrate innovation and leadership in cultural policy. The 'City/Local or Regional Government' category honours municipalities and regional authorities that have implemented outstanding policies integrating culture into sustainable development. The 'Individual' category recognises people who have made exceptional contributions to advancing cultural rights and the role of culture in urban and territorial governance.

Application forms for cities and nomination forms for individuals are open between December 2025 and March 2026. Cities have until 12 March 2026 to submit their applications, whilst the International Jury will convene in May 2026 to evaluate submissions. Results will be announced in June 2026, with an Award Ceremony to follow later in the year.

About the Award
The International Award UCLG – Mexico City – Culture 21 is a collaborative initiative between United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Mexico City, and the Culture 21 network. It builds upon the principles of Agenda 21 for Culture, which positions culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development alongside economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental balance.

Cities and individuals working at the intersection of culture, human rights, and sustainable development are encouraged to apply or nominate candidates. More information about eligibility requirements, application processes, and past winners is available on the Award's official website at www.agenda21culture.net/award.
