The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted work patterns across the world and this is having a serious social-economic impact at local government level. Subsequently, most cities have implemented emergency responses to support job retention, and are developing long-term measures for an inclusive and fast recovery.
Authors, Patricia Couti and Nerea Heras (Eurocities), in their paper‚ City employment & Covid-19: from crisis to recovery‘ highlight short-term measures being adopted by some cities during lockdown, as well as longer-term strategies for employment recovery.
The author’s showcase work being undertaken by cities to map and develop the skills needed in emerging sectors and the programs adopted to help people enter or transit the labour market.
The paper also includes local government initiatives to increase the attractiveness of jobs in the health care sector both in the short and long term and includes practical examples.
