5th Guangzhou Award shortlist announcement

15 cities across the globe have been shortlisted for the 5th Guangzhou Award.

The Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation was established in 2012 and is a biennial event co-sponsored by the City of GuangzhouMetropolis (World Association of Major Metropolises and UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments).  The Award is open to all cities and regions worldwide, including members of UCLG, Metropolis.  

The Guangzhou Award recognizes innovation in improving social, economic and environmental sustainability in cities and regions to advance the prosperity and the quality of life of their citizens. The Award supports the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), contributing to the creation of inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and human settlements. 

The 5th edition of the Guangzhou Award recevied 273 submissions from 175 local and regional governments in 60 countries across the world. 11 international experts across 16 times zones met virtually to review, assess and select the 15 cites that have been shortlisted for outstanding initiatives.

  • The Urban Wage Employment Initiative – Reducing Vulnerabilities and Enhancing Resilience of the Urban, All 114 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of Odisha, India
  • Promoting Sustainable Environment Conservation and Women empowerment through Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) in Berhampur, Berhampur, India
  • The Roles of Public Health Service through OMABA Cooking Centre for Managing Malnourished and Stunting Children, Bandung City Government, Indonesia
  • Engaging the Citizen to be Part of the Emergency Response Plan to Fight against COVID-19, Union of Dannieh Municipalities, Lebanon
