The Accessible Life Park, spanning 4,250 square meters, was conceived and constructed through a collaborative effort between the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality and experts from the city's Disability and Health, as well as Parks and Gardens departments. Situated within easy reach of four central districts of the city, the park was officially opened in July 2021and has since provided services to approximately 165 individuals at no cost.
One of the hallmark features of the Accessible Life Park is its commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that individuals of all ages and from various disability groups can enjoy their time comfortably and safely. Central to this mission is the expansive and accessible social activity area, which encompasses a swimming pool, extensive green spaces, meeting rooms, workshops, play areas, a fully equipped dance floor for dance and fitness activities, as well as dedicated resting areas. The park also hosts activities specifically organized for parents, fostering a sense of community and support.
The Accessible Life Park distinguishes itself by offering a wide range of both individual and group activities led by expert trainers. Notably, the park pioneers the "Developmental Playgroup" project, a ground-breaking endeavour among municipalities in Turkey. This project aims to address sensory loss in children aged 0 to 6, exacerbated by prolonged periods of social and environmental isolation during the pandemic lockdown. Psychologists play a pivotal role in this initiative, closely monitoring the developmental progress of these children and facilitating improvements in their movement, language, and social skills.
In addition to its focus on physical and mental development, the park promotes skill-building and economic opportunities within the community. It achieves this through a diverse array of sport activities and handicraft workshops. These activities not only nurture a sense of responsibility and camaraderie within teams but also create economic avenues by showcasing products crafted in these workshops.
