Urban Answers to Global Challenges

Successfully concluding its latest iteration, the 14th Metropolis World Congress has reinforced its standing as a cornerstone event for global urban leaders, public administrators, and urban planning specialists. This year's congress was organised within the framework of the Brussels Urban Summit 2023, further emphasising its international significance.

Major announcements from the Congress include:

  • the appointment of Mr Barthelemy Dias, the Mayor of Dakar, as the incoming Metropolis president, assuming the role on 24 January 2024 from Claudia López, Mayor of Bogotá
     
  • the election of a new Board of Directors. This group is tasked with guiding Metropolis's efforts in the upcoming years, with a focus on urban sustainability and global connectivity.
     
  • The Marmara Municipalities Union has been confirmed as the host for World Metropolitan Day 2023, which will take place in Istanbul. This annual event is instrumental in fostering dialogues around urban challenges and opportunities.

The 14th Metropolis World Congress effectively convened more than 30 mayors and vice-mayors along with over 250 participants from the Metropolis membership that encompasses 150 major cities around the world. Conference attendees successfully bridged political and geopolitical divides to strengthen the association’s philosophy that cities stand at the epicentre of current global challenges.
